Creating Articles for Registered Users / Members only PDF Print E-mail

Often we come across the requirement to limit articles in a website to registered users only. There are various reasons for limiting yourarticles to registered users only, you may want to offer better qualityarticles to your website’s regular members, or you may want to control thedissemination of information from your website. Whatever your reasons, it is possible in Joomla to create an article “teaser”, and only provide the full article to registered users. The following is a step by step guide on how to do this in Joomla.

Step 1 – Create the article intro and article text

Naturally, the first thing you want to do is to create your article, with the appropriate article intro and text. Ideally you’d want to use appropriate keywords in the intro article, to ensure that search engines can send traffic to your articles as necessary. Also we suggest that you create a category which will contain only articles which will be available to registered users. The reason for this will become clear later on in this article, though it always makes sense to organise your articles.

In Joomla 1.5 you’ll need to use the Read More function to ensure the split between your article introduction, and the full text of the article.

Step 2: Set the Access Level to Registered User

Once you have written you article, you need to change the accessibility of the article. By default articles are visible to everyone (Public). You need to set the Access level to Registered. This is done via the Article parameters to the right:

Step 3: Create a new menu link to the Article

Once you have set the article with the appropriate access, you need to create a link from the main menu. This link will provide the view to the intro of the article as discussed earlier. To do this, create a new menu item (e.g. Menus > Main Menu > New), then select Articles > Article > Section or Category Blog Layout as follows:

The blog layout will create a listing of all the articles in the section or category which you have chosen. The best idea would be to create categories where all articles are available to registered users only. This will ensure that only “intro” articles will be shown in this menu item.

After naming the menu item, selecting the category where you have saved your “Registered” articles. This will create a listing of “intro”articles, which will be available only to registered users.

Step 4: Set Show Unauthorized links to Yes

The last step you need to do is to set the parameter such that a link is shown if the user is not logged in. This is done by selecting Yes for Show Unauthorised Links in the Parameters (Component) of the menu item.

Final Result

The end result is as follows. You have the intro to the article and a link to "Register to Read More" :)
